Hinan is located in the busy center of Tokyo and aims to provide a peaceful retreat amid the energetic urban atmosphere. The design focuses on creating a space where individuals can escape the pressures of city life. Its concept centers around the idea of refuge, using traditional Japanese architectural principles to foster a connection with nature while including modern features to improve the overall experience for its users.

Design Concept

The design of Hinan pays special attention to the relationship between people and their environment. A prominent feature is the large skylight, which brings natural light deep into the interior, enhancing the sense of openness. This design element mimics the feeling of being outdoors. The absence of lateral windows ensures privacy, allowing occupants to feel removed from the surrounding hustle and bustle. This careful arrangement creates a serene and welcoming atmosphere.

Construction Approach

Hinan's construction involves a lightweight wooden framing system, which supports quick assembly and flexibility in placement within the city. This choice is particularly useful in a densely populated area, where large machinery might not be practical. Smaller teams can readily put the structure together on site, limiting disruption to daily activities in the immediate vicinity. Temporary concrete foundations provide the necessary stability, while specially designed footings help the structure withstand potential earthquake forces, important in Tokyo’s seismic landscape.

Community Engagement

The design encourages community interaction through thoughtful details. Each cabin features a raised modular platform that leads to a sliding door, serving as both an entrance and a communal space. This platform acts as a seating area, inviting individuals to gather, sit, and connect with one another. The design fosters engagement, encouraging people to spend time outside of the cabin as well, creating a sense of shared experience among users.

The simple and clean lines of this design blend well with the urban setting. Inside, light wood finishes create a warm and inviting space, allowing visitors to feel comfortable. The arrangement promotes contemplation and rest, providing a much-needed contrast to the fast pace of city life.
