Crafted from larch wood and concrete, the elevated platform harmonizes with Iceland's rugged landscape to provide visitors with immersive panoramic views and an interactive experience of the surrounding environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Crafted entirely from locally sourced larch wood, enhancing sustainability.
02
Incorporates cantilevered sections for extended views without obstructing the landscape.
03
Features multiple vantage points to immerse visitors in the surrounding scenery.
04
Constructed using weather-resistant materials to withstand Iceland’s harsh climate.
05
Designed to encourage interaction with both the building and its natural environment.

The Grjótagjá Ark is an architectural project located in Iceland that integrates itself with the unique geological features of the surrounding landscape. The design serves as both a viewing platform and an interactive space for visitors, enhancing their engagement with the environment. The structure’s elegant form and careful material selection allow it to blend seamlessly into its natural context while providing significant functional benefits.

The project primarily utilizes larch wood for its warm aesthetic and adaptability to the local climate. Concrete is employed in the foundation, ensuring stability, while glass elements maximize views, allowing guests to fully experience the landscape. Steel components provide added durability for the cantilevered sections of the design. This combination not only reinforces the structure’s integrity but also contributes to its visual appeal.

Innovative Spatial Organization

What distinguishes the Grjótagjá Ark from other architectural endeavors in similar environments is its innovative spatial arrangement. The design encourages movement through a series of ascending walkways and platforms, which guide visitors on a curated journey through the site. This approach fosters an intimate connection with the landscape, as users are exposed to varying perspectives and experiences throughout their visit.

The integration of multiple vantage points enhances the aesthetic experience. Visitors are offered panoramic views of the dramatic Icelandic scenery while allowing for immersive interaction with the environment. By prioritizing visual engagement, the design aligns architectural form with its geographical context.

Sustainable Design Strategies

The project also emphasizes sustainability through the careful selection of materials and construction practices. The use of locally sourced larch wood reduces the ecological footprint of the structure, highlighting an awareness of environmental impact. Additionally, the design minimizes disruption to the natural surroundings, ensuring that the Ark complements rather than competes with its landscape.

In summary, the Grjótagjá Ark elevates the dialogue around architecture within sensitive environments through its thoughtful integration of form, function, and sustainability. To explore the architectural plans, sections, and design approaches further, readers are encouraged to review the project presentation for more insights into this compelling architectural endeavor.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
