Incorporating a wood membrane with flexible movable walls and shutter-doors, the structure offers a dynamic living environment that seamlessly blends domestic comfort with dedicated artistic workspace.
5 key facts about this project
01
Wood membrane structure enhances environmental integration.
02
Movable walls in workshops allow for easy reconfiguration.
03
Shutter-doors provide adjustable light and privacy.
04
Repurposed foundation rocks connect to local history.
05
Pivoting doors double as artist canvases, merging function and art.

The Painters' Lake House, located in Cernostes Lake, Latvia, presents a thoughtful blend of living and working spaces tailored for artists. The design aims to support both family life and creative practice within a single structure. By connecting the home and the workshop, the framework reinforces the relationship between daily living and artistic expression, all while staying rooted in the local cultural landscape.

Design Concept
The vision unites the house and the workshop under one roof, utilizing a wood membrane that creates a cohesive environment. This membrane serves as both a protective layer and a medium of interaction, allowing residents to move fluidly between domestic activities and artistic work. The layout promotes a sense of community while reflecting the traditions and rhythms of rural life in Latvia.

Adaptability and Flexibility
Flexibility is a key component of the design. In the workshops, movable walls allow artists to change their environment based on specific project needs. Such adaptability supports collaborative efforts and can transform the space to fit various functions. This consideration for changeability is essential to accommodate the diverse requirements of creative work.

Natural Light and Connection to Environment
Natural light plays an important role in the living experience. The design incorporates shutter-doors that provide options for both light and privacy. This feature not only enhances the interior spaces but also connects the house to its peaceful surroundings. By inviting the outdoors in, the design fosters a calming atmosphere, which is beneficial for both daily routines and the creative process.

Materiality
Several materials contribute to the overall design. Insulated glass is used to ensure energy efficiency while maximizing daylight. The wood frame structure adds warmth and connects the building to its natural setting. Pivoting doors designed to double as canvases further illustrate how functional aspects can enhance artistic expression. Additionally, a louver system built with 20 mm timber facilitates airflow without compromising privacy. The decision to reuse old barn foundation rocks reinforces a commitment to sustainability and the site's historical context.

The Painters' Lake House illustrates a balance between modern living and cultural heritage, offering comfort and inspiration. The design captures the beauty and tranquility of its surroundings, encouraging creativity and reflection within its thoughtfully crafted spaces.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025: Celebrating Architectural Creativity and Visionary Unbuilt Designs with a Total Prize Fund of €100,000

`
Competition organisers

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 is an international architecture competition dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the value of unrealized architectural designs. It invites architects, designers, and students worldwide to submit visionary projects that have not yet been constructed, highlighting the power of ideas and the creativity behind the design process. By focusing on unbuilt work, the competition aims to bring forward concepts that shape the future of architecture and push the boundaries of the profession.

Participants can compete in three categories based on project scale: Small Wonders (up to 100 m²), Medium Marvels (101–999 m²), and Large Visions (over 1,000 m²). Each category winner will receive €20,000, and additional prizes include honorable mentions, student awards, and a special Best Presentation Award. Winning projects will gain significant international exposure through Buildner’s publicity campaign and a feature article on ArchDaily, providing a unique opportunity to showcase creative ideas to a global audience.

The Buildner’s Unbuilt Award 2025 encourages entrants to submit any type of unbuilt project, from conceptual visions to detailed designs, celebrating bold innovation without the constraints of realization. Important deadlines: registration closes on October 30, 2025; submissions are due by November 20, 2025; winners will be announced on December 17, 2025.
