inn'6 is a contemporary architectural design located along a significant 3500-kilometer route, designed to provide a modern rest stop for travelers in Europe seeking connection with culture and nature. It echoes the historical purpose of traditional inns, serving as a vital resting space for those on a journey.

The design concept is centered on modularity, allowing for inherent flexibility and responsiveness to the evolving needs of its users. This structure functions as both a waypoint and a place of retreat, uniting the experience of travel and exploration in a cohesive manner.

Primary Structure Module

The primary structure module serves as the main feature, designed with two levels that provide both an observation area and sleeping accommodations. The elevated design gives visitors a chance to enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding area, enhancing their connection to the landscape. By functioning as a necessary stop along the journey, the module enables travelers to pause, gather their thoughts, and appreciate their surroundings.

Sanitary Module

The sanitary module is practical and compact, housing essential facilities like a compost toilet, sink, and shower. Rainwater is collected and stored underground, allowing for a self-sufficient system that operates without mechanical components. This systematic approach promotes sustainability and demonstrates an awareness of environmental issues, aligning with modern practices in green architecture.

Food/Bike Module

Designed to meet practical needs, the food/bike module provides dedicated space for food preparation and bike maintenance. This thoughtful addition acknowledges the varied needs of travelers, particularly those cycling along the route. An external bike rack allows easy access for users, encouraging active engagement with both the journey and their own physical well-being.

Enclosure Panels

The enclosure panels are integral to defining sleeping areas within the design. They use a repeating pattern for structure and sheeting, creating private spaces that retain a sense of community. The careful arrangement of these panels makes effective use of space, allowing for personal comfort while also supporting interaction among travelers.

Materials

Timber and steel are the primary materials used in inn'6, contributing to its overall character. Timber brings warmth and a natural presence, while steel ensures durability and strength. Together, these materials create a balanced environment, one that focuses on the needs and comforts of travelers, fostering a genuine sense of place throughout the journey.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
