Tactile Spaces Enhanced by Composite Materials and Textured Surfaces for Inclusive Design

Project in-detail

Crafted with composite materials and incorporating textured surfaces, the design creates tactile pathways and soundscapes, fostering an inclusive environment for visually impaired individuals to navigate and connect with their surroundings.
5 key facts about this project
01
Crafted using composite materials for enhanced structural performance.
02
Incorporates textured surfaces to aid spatial navigation for visually impaired users.
03
Features a central courtyard designed as a sensory garden for immersive experiences.
04
Utilizes soundscapes created through material choices to support orientation.
05
Includes spiraled pathways that promote gradual movement and exploration.
The architectural design project “Perceptive Field” presents a multifaceted approach to creating spaces for visually impaired individuals. Focused on enhancing sensory experiences, this project reconceptualizes traditional architecture to prioritize tactile and auditory interactions rather than visual aesthetics.

The layout is organized around a central courtyard, which serves as the project's focal point, allowing for a combination of private and communal spaces. The structure unfolds in a labyrinthine manner, incorporating various pathways that facilitate navigation for individuals at different levels of mobility. This configuration not only aids in spatial orientation but also fosters a sense of safety and comfort in movement.

Unique Design Approaches
One distinct element of this project is its commitment to multisensory design principles. The combination of varied textures and materials enriches the tactile experience. Flooring integrates smooth and coarse surfaces to provide feedback underfoot, which is essential for spatial awareness. The walls are constructed from composite materials that allow for textural variation, thereby enabling occupants to use touch as a navigational tool.

Moreover, the integration of acoustic elements stands out as a significant design feature. The careful selection of materials impacts sound dynamics, creating auditory cues that assist users in orienting themselves within the space. This interaction fosters an environment where sound plays a crucial role in navigation and community engagement.

Spatial Configuration and Functionality
The function of “Perceptive Field” extends beyond mere shelter. It provides an inclusive space that accommodates the needs of its users and promotes social interaction. The landscaped courtyard hosts sensory gardens filled with a diverse array of plants, enriching the environment through fragrance, sound, and tactile contact.

Key to this design is the emphasis on safety and predictability within movement. The pathways are carefully designed to reduce the risk of disorientation, using gentle curves that guide individuals from one area to the next. This method promotes exploration while maintaining a sense of security.

Overall, “Perceptive Field” is a nuanced exploration of architecture tailored specifically for those with visual impairments. The project stands as a paradigm of how architecture can be thoughtfully designed to enhance sensory experiences and promote social inclusion. Design a new small-scale home concept in the 10th edition of MICROHOME — 100,000 € prize + construction

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
