5 key facts about this project
Homestead Heights - The Prairies on Reflection is an architectural initiative located in De Smet, South Dakota. This design incorporates two primary structures: the Observation Silo and the Communal Barn.
This project integrates architecture with the region's historical narrative, offering functional spaces for community interaction and engagement with nature. The design emphasizes the relationship between built structures and the prairie landscape, using form and materials that respect the local ecology and cultural heritage.
Exploration of Community and Heritage
The Observation Silo, a transparent polycarbonate landmark, provides panoramic prairie views and natural light. Flexible gathering spaces, including a hearth and movable benches, accommodate diverse community activities. The Communal Barn, with its traditional agricultural profile, hosts community events and fosters social interaction. A large overhanging roof provides shelter for outdoor activities, while wood and polycarbonate elements ensure energy efficiency and environmental compatibility.
Integration of Natural Landscapes
An extensive boardwalk connects the Silo and Barn, extending into the Big Slough wetland to create an immersive prairie experience. Constructed from durable, weather-resistant materials, the boardwalk remains unobtrusive within the landscape. The project fosters both community interaction and individual reflection, encouraging engagement with the historical narrative and natural environment through thoughtful placement of structures within the prairie.
