5 key facts about this project
City of The Sea is a conceptual proposal situated in Tuas, Singapore, addressing the city-state’s need for land while consolidating port facilities into a single site. The design explores vertical development along the coastline, integrating residential, commercial, and recreational functions within towers that optimize land use and redefine urban connections to the sea.
Adaptive Reuse and Materiality
Retired shipping containers are repurposed as functional building components, cleaned and refurbished before incorporation. This approach introduces sustainability through adaptive reuse, providing a model for integrating existing materials into urban infrastructure while maintaining structural reliability and flexibility.
Spatial Strategy and Mixed-Use Program
The towers combine varied programmatic functions to support a dynamic urban environment. Lower levels include terraces and gentle slopes that facilitate interaction with natural elements, while upper levels accommodate residential and commercial activities. Sunken containers create aquatic habitats and serve as natural flood barriers, integrating ecological considerations with urban life.
Structural Design and Resilience
A robust steel framework elevates the towers above sea level, ensuring effective drainage and resilience against coastal flooding. This structural system supports both human activity and marine integration, allowing the development to coexist with environmental processes and encouraging a connection between urban and natural systems.
