Prefabricated Units With Quick-Connect Fittings for Urban Housing Solutions

Project in-detail

Utilizing prefabricated units with quick-connect fittings, this initiative transforms urban parking lots into efficient housing solutions designed to accommodate those facing homelessness.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes prefabricated bathrooms with quick-connect fittings for rapid assembly.
02
Includes features for ADA-compliance in all unit designs.
03
Incorporates rooftop solar panels to support all-electric living.
04
Allows for easy relocation to family member properties for transitional housing.
05
Designed as Accessory Dwelling Units to maximize urban density.

The Crisis Housing Response project converts underused city-owned parking lots into functional housing units that address urban homelessness. Located in an urban area, the initiative includes 1,304 dwellings designed to accommodate around 2,608 individuals. The concept focuses on modular living units, creating an efficient approach to meet the urgent need for housing.

Prefabricated Elements

The design uses prefabricated bathrooms with quick-connect fittings installed below the floor. This design choice enables fast assembly and reduces the need for extensive construction work on-site. Bathrooms are equipped with pivot frosted glass doors to provide privacy while optimizing interior space. There is also the option to expand bathrooms to include ADA-compliant features and changing rooms, reflecting a commitment to accessibility.

Efficient Layout

Each modular living unit is arranged to make the best use of available space. These dwellings come with minimal but essential features, ensuring that they do not compete with existing market rates. The design allows the units to fit within the rear yard setback, qualifying them as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Incorporating storefronts with built-in window blinds and lockable roll-up doors increases flexibility in how rooms can be used together, making it especially suitable for families.

Sustainability Focus

Sustainability is a key factor in the project, as evidenced by the inclusion of rooftop solar panels that support all-electric units. This focus on energy efficiency addresses current environmental concerns. Additionally, the modular nature of the buildings allows for future adjustments. They can be taken apart and repurposed or reclad, extending their usefulness over time.

Innovative Residential Solutions

A notable aspect of this initiative is the provision for transitional housing. Dwellings can be relocated to properties owned by family members or sponsors, offering a potential path to stability for those in need. The project includes a buyback program to aid individuals in moving to market-rate housing, helping to ensure both immediate and long-term solutions.

Thoughtful design elements enhance daily living. For instance, fold-down backrests on daybeds can double as bunk storage, optimizing space efficiency. Each unit contains essential amenities, such as hand sinks, cabinets, GFCI outlets, and electric tankless water heaters, providing all necessary comforts in a compact layout.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
