The Golden Ratio coffee shop is situated in northern Iceland, close to Lake Mývatn and the Hverfjall volcano. The design focuses on creating a connection with the natural landscape while providing a space for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery. By using the principles of the golden ratio, the project achieves a modular layout that maximizes views of the surrounding area.

Architectural Composition

The structure includes four distinct modules that are rotated to align with the golden ratio. This orientation highlights the important geographical features of the region, including the volcanic mountains and the northern lights. Each module is designed to enhance the relationship between the building and the landscape, creating an inviting atmosphere for those who enter.

Materiality

The exterior cladding utilizes weathered larch wood, which complements the dark tones of the volcanic environment. This material was chosen for its durability and natural beauty. Inside, glued laminated timber beams ensure structural support while allowing for open spaces. These materials help the coffee shop blend into its surroundings and withstand Iceland's harsh weather.

Spatial Experience

Visitors enter the coffee shop through a well-organized layout that guides them through various spaces. A central reception area leads to an interactive exhibition space featuring a model of Hverfjall. This setup encourages exploration and learning, allowing guests to connect with the geological history of the area. Each space is carefully crafted to enhance the overall experience.

Light and Views

Large panoramic windows are a key element in the design, framing views of the surrounding landscape. These windows fill the space with natural light, making it warm and inviting. The café area invites visitors to sit back and enjoy their drinks while looking out at the beautiful scenery. Through thoughtful design, the coffee shop brings the outdoors in, allowing the landscape to be part of every visitor’s experience.
