Uz Augsu is located in northern Latvia, specifically within the North Vidzeme Reserve. It is designed to connect built structures with the natural landscape. The site is rich with glacial lakes, gentle hills, wetlands, and meadows. Kurgi farm is at the center, comprising a collection of compact buildings with pitched roofs.

These structures are designed to merge with the environment, reflecting Latvia’s cultural and historical context. The observation tower stands out as a main feature, enhancing verticality and providing unique viewpoints of the landscape.

Functionality and Experience

Visitors ascend through a series of clearly defined stairs that enhance the journey upward. This upward movement invites engagement with the surrounding views both near and far. A paved path leads from the farm to the tower, allowing direct interaction with the wetlands and creating an immersive experience rooted in the region’s geographic characteristics.

Spatial Transition

An architectural element positioned near the farm creates a transition to the observation tower. It is crafted from the tower's mass and serves as the entrance. This space is functional for equestrian activities, providing feeding areas for horses and offering a pergola for guests who want to learn more about the local horse breed, the Latvian Ardennes.

Cultural Symbolism

Approaching the tower reveals a detail where steel mesh frames the structure. This mesh displays dual triangular symbols based on Latvian mythology, connecting spiritual and earthly concepts. The upward triangle represents aspirations toward the sky, while the downward triangle signifies grounding in the material world. This balance adds depth to the structure, linking it to local culture.

Spatial Interplay

As visitors climb higher, expansive views of the landscape become visible. The open structure allows natural elements to flow inside, maintaining a connection to the environment. Large openings in the design create a sensory experience filled with colors and scents from the surrounding nature. The upper terrace and enclosed observation room provide opportunities for visitors to appreciate expansive vistas of plains, hills, and glacial lakes.

The design culminates with a well-defined staircase that presents a clear upward path. It aligns with visitors' journeys, guiding them toward the sky while connecting them with the beauty of their surroundings.
