The Earth Energies Sanctuary Meditation Cabin is located in the peaceful landscape of Mangatarata, New Zealand. It serves as a retreat designed to enhance mental well-being and foster a connection with the outdoors. The overall concept integrates aspects of Maori culture, focusing on grounding and alignment. This space encourages visitors to reflect and find calmness through its thoughtful design.

Design Concept

The cabin features an elongated, narrow shape that invites a deep sense of immersion. Three planes gently rest above each other, creating a unique interaction between the inside and outside. This layout offers wide views of the native bush while protecting visitors from the elements, contributing to a quiet and balanced space for meditation and contemplation.

Cultural Influence

The design draws inspiration from traditional Maori architecture, particularly the Wharenui and the Hakari. The Wharenui resembles the human body, symbolizing community and connection. The Hakari consists of lightweight structures for gatherings. By merging elements from these traditions, the cabin reflects the history and culture of the area, enriching the experience for all who visit.

Materiality and Structure

The roof is made of matte anodized aluminum, chosen for its practical benefits. It helps manage light and temperature, reflecting the natural surroundings and making the cabin a part of its environment. Rainwater is channeled from the roof into nearby flower beds, supporting local plant life and enhancing the ecological aspect of the site.

Spatial Dynamics

Large awning windows allow for fresh air and visual connection to the landscape, enhancing the overall experience inside the cabin. The thoughtful positioning of the structure, aligned with true North, ensures maximum light exposure in the meditation area. During certain times of the day, sunlight brightens the flower essence altars, creating a vibrant energy that encourages mindfulness.

The foundation consists of concrete piers, providing a solid base that supports the cabin while minimizing its impact on the land. This careful balance between structural integrity and environmental consideration is key to the project.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
