The 3 Little Yogins is set in a tranquil landscape designed specifically for yoga and meditation. This design prioritizes sustainability and ecological awareness while encouraging a connection between users and their environment. The goal is to create an atmosphere that integrates harmoniously with nature, utilizing thoughtful strategies to improve user experience alongside practical functionality.

Vegetalized Roof

At the heart of the design is a vegetalized roof that acts as insulation and also supports biodiversity by filtering dust through the plants. A mechanical ventilation system is incorporated to help manage humidity, ensuring a comfortable environment for practice. The roof serves multiple functions, enhancing both the aesthetic and environmental traits of the building.

Structural Design

The building is raised on stilts, which reduces its impact on the site. This design choice allows for effective rainwater collection and helps in managing domestic wastewater. By elevating the structure, the design promotes a connection with the natural surroundings without being intrusive. The main platform is a light, rectangular shape oriented north-south, maximizing the flow of natural light and providing expansive views.

Materials Selection

Key materials used in construction include a solar thermal blanket made of natural slate for the roof, cross-laminated timber for the walls, and dual-glazed windows. Wood fiber panels are used for insulation, along with a ventilated air gap for added efficiency. Rice paper louvers are strategically placed for natural ventilation, contributing to a comfortable climate within the yoga space.

Spatial Experience

Visitors are welcomed by several pathways that lead to different areas, such as the main yoga room or a meditation plateau. This arrangement invites exploration and encourages interaction among users, creating spaces for both personal reflection and group activities. The design promotes a sense of calm, allowing individuals to engage fully with their surroundings.

The architectural form merges beautifully with the topography, highlighted in renderings that showcase its relationship with the nearby mountains and valleys. The carefully considered design aims to provide a peaceful place for yoga and meditation, fostering a deeper appreciation for both the practice and nature itself.

Vancouver Tall Challenge: Building Higher Downtown

`
Competition organisers

The Vancouver Tall Challenge: Building Higher Downtown is an international architecture competition organized by Buildner in collaboration with the City of Vancouver and the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA). The competition invites architects, designers, planners, and creative thinkers to explore innovative approaches to tall buildings in Vancouver’s downtown core, focusing on sustainability, livability, urban density, public space, and the city’s strong connection to nature. As Vancouver continues to grow, participants are challenged to rethink how vertical development can enhance urban life and contribute to a more vibrant, inclusive, and resilient city identity.

The competition offers a total prize fund of $15,000 CAD, with winning proposals selected by an international jury of architects, planners, academics, and city-building professionals. Key dates include the final registration deadline on October 29, 2026, submission deadline on November 30, 2026, and winners announcement on January 26, 2027.
