The Abu Dhabi Flamingo Visitor Center is located within the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and is designed to enhance visitor interaction with the environment. The building features a circular layout that provides expansive views of the wetlands, encouraging a deeper connection to nature. This design promotes flexibility, allowing visitors to explore the area freely and engage with the wildlife around them.

Structural Framework

The center’s structure consists of prefabricated wooden frames that create the interior spaces and support the upper observation deck. By using prefabricated components, construction is more efficient and less disruptive to the surrounding environment. This method not only speeds up the building process but also aligns with sustainability goals.

Transparency and Interaction

Extensive use of glass in the walls and roof helps connect the inside of the building with the outside landscape. Visitors can easily observe the wetlands from various vantage points, enhancing their experience of the natural world. An additional layer of blinds is incorporated to help manage sunlight and keep temperatures comfortable during hot weather, providing a pleasant indoor environment.

Open Layout

Inside the center, the design emphasizes an open plan that allows for smooth movement and clear sightlines throughout the space. Traditional walls are used only in necessary areas, creating versatile spaces for different functions. These include a reception area, a gift shop, offices, a display area, a training room, a café, and restrooms. This layout encourages interaction among guests, fostering a sense of community while raising awareness about the local ecosystem.

Design Detail

A key design feature is the northern section of the roof, which is lowered to guide visitors toward the upper observation deck. This thoughtful approach not only improves visibility of the wetlands but also creates a welcoming atmosphere that invites guests to enjoy the landscape from an elevated position. The building promotes engagement with nature, making the experience of visiting the wetland more meaningful for everyone.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
