We’d like to take the opportunity to introduce you to one of our Honorable mention winner for our "Portable Reading Rooms / Edition #2" competition – Laura Raspanti from Italy!
Laura Raspanti from Italy
I am an architect graduated from Politecnico di Milano. I currently work in an architectural studio in Milan, where I am mainly involved in the design of residential buildings. I have previously worked on projects of interior design.
Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been involved?
Up to now I have mainly dealt with the design of residential buildings of medium-large scale.
What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?
I believe that architecture’s primary role is to respond to the needs of the users who experience it, paying attention not to limit itself to mere functionality. Infatc architecture has the power to communicate to people, arousing emotions and suggestions. Thus the architect’s task is to ensure users’ well-being by condensing into a single creation a plurality of elements and aspects: shapes, light, spaces, functionality and aesthetics, without ignoring the urban context.
Why do you participate in architecture competitions?
Because I believe that architectural competitions are extremely stimulating occasions—a "space" free from constraints in which you can express your point of view—they allow me to explore different and original topics. They constitute a precious opportunity for creative enrichment and self-reflection.
What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?
Just try! Give this opportunity a chance. Approaching to unusual themes is always an exciting experience.
