International architecture competition · Second edition
Design the next suburban home for the USA.
The simple house shape everyone can draw, the symbol of home, fills the header in blue. Left alone, it is redrawn in turn by thirteen American house types, from the 1700s saltbox to the 1990s McMansion, then sinks into an empty plot for the next house, up to 1,500 square feet. The pointer moves through the same history.
For over half a century, the American suburban home has been more than just a building: it has been a cultural symbol, a promise, and at times a problem. Once imagined as the embodiment of comfort and stability, it now often represents excess, isolation, and environmental strain. How can this archetype be redefined for a century marked by climate urgency, economic pressure, and shifting social values? What does the “American home” mean today, and what should it mean tomorrow?

The Next House: USA 2027 is the second edition of Buildner’s invitation to explore those questions. The competition calls on architects, designers, and thinkers worldwide to envision a new suburban prototype: a home that is compact yet generous, adaptable yet grounded, replicable yet sensitive to place. It asks participants to go beyond size and spectacle, and instead focus on what makes a home truly meaningful: its adaptability, sustainability, affordability, and ability to nurture both family and community life.

The first edition’s twelve houses overlaid into one grey average: the archetype of the American suburban home. Left alone, it brings each house forward in turn; the pointer does the same. Past the last house the archetype fades and leaves an empty plot for the next house, up to 1,500 square feet.
Open to all, from students to established professionals, the competition sets one task: design a home for a standard household of two adults and one child, with a maximum size of 1,500 sq ft (about 140 m²), conceived as a prototype that could be replicated across the diverse climates and contexts of the United States.

The second edition carries the conversation forward: how can the suburban home evolve to reflect today’s realities and tomorrow’s aspirations?
The Next House: USA seeks ideas that redefine the American home, not as a relic of the past, but as a foundation for a smarter, healthier, and more connected future.

This competition is part of the broader discussion that Buildner has initiated on the meaning of home. Buildner has been creating dialogue around what a home truly is through recent success stories such as the House of the Future in partnership with the Dubai Government (250,000 € prize fund), the Kingspan Microhome (150,000 € prize fund), and the AIA Denver Affordable Housing Challenge (20,000 USD prize fund), each exploring new ways to rethink scale, culture, and affordability in housing. The first edition of the Next House: USA took the question to the American suburb; the second edition continues it.

Trained by the brief itself; the optional design assessment turns your submission into structured feedback.
Winning projects have the potential to be realised.
The competition client has expressed interest in constructing the winning project. The site is real, and the awarded proposals go directly to the client's table.
Winning does not guarantee construction; the final decision always rests with the client.
Build your name, attract new clients and partnerships
Publication is guaranteed for every winning entry: online, in print, and across international media.
Winners are showcased on ArchDaily, the world's most-visited architecture platform, through its partnership with Buildner: visibility that brings new opportunities, clients and reputation.
Winning projects are printed in Buildner's annual book, a permanent, physical record of the year's best unbuilt architecture, distributed internationally.
A published interview and a permanent project page on Buildner tell the story in your own words, and stay linkable for as long as your career needs them.
Buildner consolidates prize funds from its individual competitions into one larger, more impactful award given once a year: the 50,000 € Buildner Medal. A prize of that size is truly life-changing. It can start a practice, fund a business, or pay off school loans. Every winning project here earns the invitation.
This international competition is open to architects, artists, and creatives from all backgrounds. Whether you are an emerging talent, an established professional, or exploring a bold new idea, your vision is welcome. All submissions must be completed in English to ensure fair evaluation.
