Jung Sungbeen

Please tell us about your company (when it was founded, where it is based, how many employees, etc) Alternatively, if you do not have a company, please give us some insights on your own professional/academia background.

I am in my sixth semester of the Bachelor’s degree in Housing and Interior Design at Chung-Ang University.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance, what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where the company/ individuals have been Involved?

I am interested in how small interventions can transform existing spaces. Through independent experiments with light and sound, I explore ways to change the atmosphere of a space and how people experience it.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

That's a tough question. I'd say architecture is a floor, wall, and a ceiling. Architect's job, I suppose, is to make them feel like more than that.

Why do you participate in architecture competitions?

I participate in competitions because I learn a lot from seeing how others respond to the same brief. After working through the same challenge myself, I also learn a lot by studying the winning entries.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture competitions?

I hesitated too because I wasn’t confident in my skills. I’d suggest choosing a brief that interests you and treating the competition as a chance to learn. You don’t have to feel completely ready before you begin.
