The Grjotagja Guest House is located in Iceland, within the Vogafjós Farm Resort. It combines the experience of a cozy retreat with the spirit of travel. The guest house sits comfortably in the volcanic landscape, where thermal springs are a natural feature. It is designed to connect visitors to the surrounding elements while offering comfort and shelter.

Architectural Design and Materiality

The building’s form is built from volcanic stone masonry, which contributes to its strength and durability. This material choice enhances the structure's connection to the land, allowing it to blend with the rugged scenery. The entrance is designed to be welcoming, serving as a point of arrival for guests who seek a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Spatial Organization

Inside, the layout is practical and thoughtful, aiming to create both shared and private experiences. A luggage room is set conveniently near the entrance, offering easy access for guests. In the main hall, the kitchen and a long bench are positioned alongside a central communal fireplace. This fireplace serves as both a source of heat and a space for social interaction, encouraging guests to come together.

Connection to Nature

The guest house’s design shifts from an enclosed front to an open rear facade that connects with the landscape. This allows guests to enjoy individual moments while still being part of the communal space. Various room arrangements provide options for rest and relaxation, inviting visitors to pause and reflect on their surroundings.

Interior Environment

Natural light is effectively utilized through well-placed openings that brighten spaces like the sauna and the silent room. These design choices create a calm and soothing atmosphere. The careful use of space means that guests can feel the outdoors, enhancing their connection to the beautiful Icelandic landscape.

A standout feature of the house is the rooftop hot tub. It offers sweeping views of the landscape, providing a perfect way to unwind and take in the natural beauty that surrounds the Grjotagja Guest House.
