5 key facts about this project
The Porto Seguro sleeping pods are found in Vale de Moses, an area known for its natural beauty. These pods offer a space for visitors to relax and recharge, connecting them to the surrounding landscape. The design aims to create a comfortable and functional environment while remaining rooted in the principles of sustainability.
Design Elements
The architecture of the pods is based on the concept of a primordial hut, drawing inspiration from essential building forms. A central multifunctional wall acts as the core of each pod, providing structure and organization. This wall helps to define various spaces while eliminating clutter. Enclosing the pods is a modular timber frame that elevates the structure and features an overhanging roof designed to manage rainwater effectively.
Adaptability and Modularity
A key feature of the design is adaptability, allowing the pods to adjust to the uneven terrain of the valley. The use of open columns at different heights provides support while considering the slopes. Lightweight trusses and beams connect to these columns, allowing for quick assembly on site. Each pod’s envelope forms part of an exposed framework, using prefabricated timber panels that can either allow views from the inside or provide privacy depending on the situation.
Spatial Organization
Inside each pod, the layout is organized around the central wall. This arrangement creates defined areas for different functions, such as sleeping, sanitation, and leisure. The design encourages easy movement along a clear path that runs perpendicular to the core wall. Such organization helps make the most out of the available space, ensuring that each area serves its purpose effectively.
Sustainability Features
Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of the overall design. Solar panels provide renewable energy, maintaining power and heating throughout the year. During warmer periods, passive cooling is achieved through natural ventilation, aided by windows positioned below the roofline. The design also includes water management systems that collect and store rainwater. Features like compost toilets and closed-loop showers contribute to reducing water use.
The wooden structure of the pods works well with the landscape, and the careful detailing in the joinery highlights the craftsmanship involved. Each element is designed to withstand environmental factors while ensuring a pleasant experience for occupants.
