Sculpted Zinc Fins and Reinforced Concrete Define Icelandic Community Pavilion

Project in-detail

With sculpted zinc fins that dynamically interact with sunlight and a robust reinforced concrete structure that harmonizes with the Icelandic landscape, the pavilion serves as a cultural hub for community engagement and artistic expression.
5 key facts about this project
01
Sculpted zinc fins adaptively control light and climate inside the pavilion.
02
Reinforced concrete provides structural resilience against harsh weather.
03
The bent A-frame design enhances spatial dynamics and visual interest.
04
Natural light is maximized through the strategic orientation of openings.
05
Community spaces are designed for flexible use to accommodate varied events.
The "Passage of Time" pavilion is an architectural installation situated in Iceland, designed to reflect the relationship between people and the ever-evolving landscapes. The project serves as a cultural and artistic hub, emphasizing the importance of local heritage while inviting interaction from visitors. Key functions of the pavilion include a café, gallery spaces, and community areas designed to foster engagement and connection. The design integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment, drawing inspiration from Iceland's unique topography.

### Unique Design Approaches
The architectural concept focuses on the theme of temporality, exploring how spaces and experiences gain significance over time. The organic forms of the structure mimic the natural contours of the landscape, promoting a sense of continuity. The use of flowing lines contrasts with traditional rectilinear architectures, creating a dynamic presence that aligns with the natural setting.

The material palette is integral to the design’s identity. Reinforced concrete provides structural resilience and durability suited for Iceland's climate. Glass elements enable transparency, allowing natural light to illuminate both communal and private areas, enhancing user experience. Zinc cladding serves a dual purpose: it offers protection against the elements while contributing to the building's modern aesthetic. This choice reflects an environmental sensitivity, ensuring the pavilion not only stands strong against weathering but also resonates with the local climatic conditions.

### Functional Areas and User Interaction
The interior layout is methodical, dividing spaces between social hubs and exhibition areas. The ground floor welcomes visitors with a lobby, box office, and café that facilitate a smooth flow of movement. This arrangement encourages spontaneous interactions, reinforcing community ties. The first floor houses a gallery and administrative offices, providing a quieter atmosphere for reflection and creative contemplation.

Unique architectural features include the façade's sculptural fins, which modulate light and create visual depth. This element acts both as a protective screen and a design statement, engaging with the changing atmosphere throughout the day. By capturing and filtering sunlight, these fins enhance the pavilion’s internal ambience and foster a sense of connection to the exterior environment.

The pavilion’s architectural identity and functionality represent a commitment to sustainability and cultural embodiment. Through its design, the "Passage of Time" pavilion stands as a testament to the power of architecture to engage people with their surroundings.
