"Mirror" is an architectural project located in the unique landscape of Iceland, designed as a movie pavilion that blends with its surroundings. The main goal is to explore the contrasting experiences found in Icelandic life, as seen in its cinema. The design emphasizes the difference between the solitary figure in vast landscapes and the warmth of shared indoor spaces. By embedding the building in the ground, the design creates a safe space for viewers while encouraging a strong connection to the surrounding scenery.

Integration with Landscape

The pavilion is carefully placed within the landscape, featuring a heavy concrete structure that grounds the building in its natural setting. This choice helps to reduce the impact on the environment while providing a solid framework. The concrete serves not only as a supportive element but also creates a visual link between the architecture and the dramatic Icelandic terrain.

Environmental Interaction

A sunken plaza situated in front of the pavilion promotes interaction with the site, lowering the visitor experience relative to the landscape. This feature encourages exploration and creates a welcoming environment. The roof design includes rift-like ridges, allowing it to rise slightly above the ground while maintaining a low profile.

Experiential Elements

An observation deck is positioned above the sunken plaza, enhancing the visitor’s connection to the expansive surroundings. From this elevated vantage point, views of the Icelandic landscape are unobstructed, reinforcing the theme of engaging with nature. Alongside this deck, mirrored reflecting pools are integrated into the design, encouraging visitors to engage visually with their environment and providing a dynamic interplay between the pavilion and the landscape.

Textural Contrasts

Inside the pavilion, natural materials create a warm atmosphere that contrasts with the stark landscape outside. This thoughtful selection enhances the tactile experience, providing a comfortable and inviting heart to the building. The connection between the warm interiors and the cold exterior captures the essence of Icelandic life, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in both the cinematic experience and the surrounding natural world.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
