Light Diffusion Through Smooth Cavities in a Lakeshore Retreat

Project in-detail

Smooth white cavities filter natural light throughout a lakeshore retreat, ensuring privacy and connection to the forest while providing a serene environment for artistic creation.
5 key facts about this project
01
Smooth white cavities are designed to enhance light diffusion throughout the cabin.
02
A rough dark envelope provides privacy while blending with the natural surroundings.
03
Clerestory windows maximize sunlight penetration without overwhelming interiors.
04
Strategic openings prioritize natural light for a harmonious daily rhythm.
05
The cabin layout supports both solitude and creative collaboration.

The summer cabin for two artists is located along a gentle lakeshore in southern Finland. It is designed as a retreat that sits between the water and the forest. The overall concept centers on creating a link with the surrounding nature, where both light and space play essential roles. The cabin adapts to natural rhythms, providing an inviting atmosphere that shifts with the time of day.

Design Concept

The design focuses on integrating the cabin with its environment. It captures the low, slanted sunlight typical of the Nordic area during mornings and evenings. The direction of the cabin allows daytime sun to filter through the trees and into the main living area via a courtyard. This connection enhances both the indoor and outdoor experiences.

Spatial Layout

Inside, the cabin includes private spaces like a bedroom and sauna. These areas are carefully illuminated through openings that maximize natural light at key times. The layout supports daily activities while promoting a sense of serenity. The movement of light across different parts of the cabin aligns with the daily routines of the inhabitants, ensuring an enriching experience throughout the day.

Materiality and Texture

While specific materials are not detailed, the design takes inspiration from the trunk of a tree. Smooth white cavities enhance the diffusion of light, creating a soft, welcoming environment. In contrast, a rough dark envelope provides structure and privacy. This texture evokes the local setting, reinforcing the connection between the cabin and its landscape.

Light Management

The design acknowledges the strong variations in sunlight that occur in Scandinavian seasons. During dark winters, the cabin remains warm and inviting, while in summer, the abundant light is enjoyable without becoming overwhelming. Clerestory windows allow sunlight to reach deeper areas of the cabin while keeping a comfortable atmosphere. Ground-level openings fitted with translucent blinds give occupants the flexibility to control the amount of light that enters, supporting both quiet moments and social interactions.

The thoughtful arrangement of textures and openings forms a cabin that is both practical and visually pleasing. The changing quality of light brings the space to life throughout the day, enhancing the connection between its occupants and the surrounding landscape.
