The hospice center designed for terminally ill individuals is located on the outskirts of a small town near Toruń, Poland. The design aims to create a comforting and safe environment for its residents, while also establishing a strong connection to the natural landscape that includes a nearby lake and a dense pine forest. The concept focuses on enhancing the quality of life for those in care, reflecting the importance of a nurturing atmosphere.

Space Organization

The building features a two-story layout with two significant atria, which allow natural light to flood the interior. The entrance is located on the southeast side, leading visitors directly into the larger atrium. This design choice promotes a warm welcome and emphasizes openness within the space. The emphasis on light contributes to the overall brightness and uplifting quality of the environment, which is essential for the well-being of patients.

Residential and Communal Areas

Patient rooms are strategically placed on the south and southwest sides, making the most of daylight exposure. This setup ensures that residents have bright and comfortable living spaces. Communal areas, such as a kitchen adjacent to the second round atrium, are designed to encourage social interaction among residents. The inclusion of comfortable seating areas fosters a sense of community and connection throughout the facility.

Facilities and Support Spaces

Essential facilities on the ground floor include a chapel, therapy and rehabilitation rooms, and a library featuring a large terrace that overlooks the serene lake. Each of these spaces is thoughtfully designed to support the emotional and psychological needs of the residents. Additionally, family rooms are integrated into the layout, creating opportunities for loved ones to provide support during difficult times.

Materiality

The construction uses laminated timber, selected for its ability to blend with the natural surroundings. This choice of material enhances the building's connection to the picturesque landscape while ensuring sustainability. The overall design creates a welcoming atmosphere that prioritizes comfort for residents and their families.

Natural light fills the shared areas, illuminating the warm tones of the timber. This light enhances the calming atmosphere of the hospice, creating a peaceful environment for all who enter.
