Guadua Framework Supporting Social Connections in Mountainous Colombia

Project in-detail

Constructed primarily from guadua, the design fosters social interaction and community living, seamlessly integrating into the mountainous landscape of Colombia as a functional residential space.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed primarily from guadua, supporting sustainable practices.
02
Features a flexible layout that allows for future module expansions.
03
Strategic ventilation design enhances comfort in a humid environment.
04
Blends seamlessly with the mountainous terrain of the Andes.
05
Fosters social interaction through thoughtfully organized communal areas.

The Mestizo House is located in the mountainous region of southwest Colombia, within the Central and Western Andes. It functions as a residence that meets various living needs while embodying the cultural spirit of the mestizo population. The design concept is based on the idea of mestizaje, or cultural blending, which emphasizes community identity and connection. This thoughtful approach results in a home that fits well within its natural environment, providing both functionality and comfort.

CULTURAL NARRATIVE

The design reflects the rich cultural background of Colombia, where identity and diversity are essential themes. It features a combination of private and communal spaces that encourage interaction among family members while respecting personal privacy. This organization supports a lifestyle that values both relationships and solitude, demonstrating the social dynamics commonly found in the region.

CLIMATIC RESPONSE

The house responds to the hot and humid climate typical of its location by implementing effective ventilation strategies. The strategic placement of windows and openings allows for natural airflow, which helps to maintain a comfortable indoor environment. This consideration for the local climate is vital, ensuring that the interior remains pleasant despite the considerable rainfall.

MATERIAL CHOICE

A vital aspect of the design is the use of guadua, a construction material that is indigenous to the area. Guadua is known for its rapid growth and strength, making it suitable for the local environment. Using this material not only promotes sustainability but also ties the structure to the cultural traditions of the region. The choice of guadua fosters a connection between the building and its surroundings, enhancing the narrative of the design.

The carefully planned arrangement of spaces encourages a connection to nature. Large openings allow light to fill the rooms while providing views of the surrounding landscape. This design choice creates a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor areas, enriching daily living. The relationship between the house, its occupants, and the vibrant ecosystem of the Andes is evident, creating a living space that feels alive and integrated with its environment.
