5 key facts about this project
Located in Öræfi, Iceland, Fire Camp is conceived as a retreat that responds to the region’s climatic challenges and dramatic natural setting. Informed by local traditions that emphasize community and hospitality, the design focuses on creating a space of warmth and respite for travelers. The layout fosters shared experiences while offering protection and comfort in a remote, weather-exposed environment.
Site Integration and Form
The triangular geometry of Fire Camp draws from the surrounding mountain landscape, both in visual alignment and in functional response to prevailing winds. The volumes are arranged to separate communal and service areas, enhancing clarity of circulation and facilitating purposeful interactions. Each form is oriented to frame views while offering shelter, resulting in a layout that reflects both contextual sensitivity and spatial efficiency.
Materiality and Sustainability
Larch timber is used for external cladding due to its resilience in harsh climates and its connection to regional construction methods. Interior surfaces combine natural wood paneling with stone flooring, contributing to thermal comfort and tactile quality. Expansive glazing maximizes natural daylight and extends visual continuity with the environment. Sustainability strategies include passive solar orientation and a steep roof profile designed to manage snow accumulation, contributing to energy efficiency and long-term performance.
