03
Point foundations minimize environmental disturbance and adapt to varied terrains.
04
Charred timber cladding increases durability while providing a unique aesthetic.
05
Continuous footbridge connects cabins without defined entry points, encouraging exploration.

Casa Engawa is an architectural retreat situated in the calm surroundings of Vale de Moses, Portugal. It is designed to support meditation and reflection, drawing inspiration from the Japanese concept of "Engawa." The cabins aim to create a deep sense of connection between users and the natural world, emphasizing the relationship between the built environment and its setting.

Conceptual Framework

The design includes four meditation cabins connected by a footbridge. This layout encourages exploration. Users travel along an open path rather than entering through a defined entrance. The design enhances the experience of nature and promotes an interactive relationship with the environment. By allowing for movement through various spaces, the cabins invite users to engage more fully with their surroundings.

Material Selection

Each cabin is wrapped in a grated steel skin. This design choice allows local plants to grow and intermingle with the structure. It also emphasizes the connection with the landscape. The cabins feature charred timber on the outside, known for its durability and weather resistance. Inside, the plywood finish creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, deepening the sensory experience within each cabin.

Architectural Dynamics

Casa Engawa draws on elements of the Japanese Engawa by focusing on organization, space, and thresholds like steps and landings. The design reinterprets traditional ideas, creating longer thresholds that soften the divide between indoor and outdoor areas. This encourages users to move freely, enhancing their sense of meditation and relaxation while connecting with nature.

Sustainable Integration

The cabins are supported by point foundations, which allow them to adapt to different ground conditions. This design approach reduces environmental impact. Elevated floors enable the use of rainwater collection systems, further promoting sustainability.

The careful connection between the architecture and the landscape forms an atmosphere conducive to contemplation. The sound of leaves in the wind blends naturally with the sight of surrounding greenery, enriching the experience for users.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
