Floating Pavilion Constructed With Volcanic Rock and Reinforced Concrete for Cinematic Experiences

Project in-detail

Elevated above the rugged Icelandic terrain, the pavilion integrates volcanic rock and reinforced concrete into its design, creating a unique space for cinematic experiences that enhances the connection between architecture and landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Elevated design allows for panoramic views of the Icelandic landscape.
02
Volcanic rock forms the base, connecting the structure to its geological context.
03
Reinforced concrete canopy provides structural integrity while blending with natural elements.
04
Large glass panels enhance natural light and foster a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.
05
Pathways designed to guide visitors through the surrounding rocky terrain.
SCAPE is an architectural project designed as a movie pavilion situated within the Icelandic landscape. The pavilion serves as a venue for film screenings, providing a space for communal viewing while fostering engagement with the dramatic natural surroundings. It effectively integrates architecture with the natural environment, creating a harmonious relationship between the built structure and its geographical context.

The pavilion's design reflects a conceptual approach that emphasizes a "landscape within a landscape." It seeks to enhance the viewers' experience by creating a dialogue between the architectural form and the unique topography of Iceland, characterized by its mountains, volcanic formations, and expansive vistas. The design prioritizes both functional and aesthetic elements by creating spaces that cater to various activities associated with cinema and public gatherings.

Unique Design Approaches

One of the key design elements of SCAPE is its elevated structure, which appears to float above the rocky terrain. This architectural choice minimizes land disturbance and allows the pavilion to coexist with the natural landscape. The use of specific materials, including reinforced concrete and volcanic rock, establishes a tactile connection to the Icelandic geology. The concrete serves as the primary structural material, offering robustness, while the volcanic rock reinforces the building's integration with its site.

The pavilion features distinct spatial configurations, including a ground floor housing the cinema hall and communal areas, and an upper level designed for observation and interaction with the surroundings. Large glass panels allow natural light to illuminate the interior and provide expansive views of the landscape, further blurring the lines between inside and outside.

Architectural Integration and Landscape Engagement

Attention to site planning in SCAPE is evident through carefully designed exterior pathways that guide visitors towards the pavilion. These pathways enhance accessibility and encourage exploration of the adjacent natural features. The architectural forms echo the undulating lines of the surrounding mountains, while the rough surfaces of the volcanic rock at the base create a foundation that feels rooted in the terrain.

SCAPE not only provides a functional space for cinematic experiences but also creates an environment that invites contemplation of the landscape. It serves as a place where architecture and nature converge, offering visitors a unique opportunity to engage with Iceland's dramatic scenery while enjoying cultural events.

Competition organisers

The 10th edition of the MICROHOME architecture competition invites architects and designers from around the world to explore the possibilities of compact, sustainable living. Hosted by Buildner in collaboration with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this special edition challenges participants to design an off-grid, modular microhome for a young professional couple, with a maximum floor area of 25 m². Designs should prioritize innovation, efficiency, and real-world feasibility.

A total prize fund of 100,000 € will be awarded, including three main prizes, the Kingspan Award, and the Hapi Homes Award, which will grant 15,000 € and lead to the construction of the selected design. The final registration deadline is September 25, 2025, and winners will be announced on Decebmer 9, 2025. For full competition details and submission guidelines, visit microhome.info.
