Floating Community Spaces with Floral Patterns and Half-Timbered Facade

Project in-detail

Aqua Rosette is located by the quiet lake in Jamno. It is designed to offer a living environment that respects local culture while embracing modern needs. The complex modernizes traditional architecture through modular design, allowing for different living arrangements. This thoughtful approach attempts to merge community interaction with nature through its structure and layout.

Cultural Integration

The design draws heavily from the local traditions of Jamno, particularly its vibrant folk art. The use of floral motifs reflects the region’s artistic heritage, which includes painted chairs that feature rich colors and intricate designs. These elements create a strong connection between the architecture and the stories of the people who live there, offering a sense of belonging to the residents.

Modular Configuration

Aqua Rosette features a flexible modular housing layout that can be arranged in two distinct ways. When the units face inward, they form a rosette shape at the center, promoting a sense of community. On the other hand, when oriented outward, the units open up, allowing for expansive views of the lake and surrounding landscape. This dual arrangement supports social interaction while maximizing the connection to nature.

Interior Character

Inside Aqua Rosette, the color scheme includes white, green, and red, drawing inspiration from local decoration styles. Floral patterns are incorporated into design elements like the folding sofa and bathroom walls, enhancing the regional character within the living space. A movable red ladder provides access to the bedroom area, offering a practical design solution that also adds visual interest. Additionally, built-in storage along the longest wall makes efficient use of space, catering to modern living needs.

Architectural Fabric

The facade reflects traditional half-timbered construction methods, using a wooden frame filled with clay. This technique preserves local building traditions, while the arrangement of formwork in squares, rectangles, and triangles adds texture to the appearance. The structure rests on a concrete float, which allows it to rise and fall with the water level, reinforcing a connection to the natural environment.

Aqua Rosette stands as a meaningful representation of local culture through its design. It balances modern architectural elements with traditional influences, creating a unique identity that respects both the past and the present.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
