Integration with London's hidden waterways promotes biodiversity and ecological awareness.

The Urban Ecosystem project represents an innovative approach to urban living by integrating ecological principles with residential architecture in Greater London. This development seeks to reconnect inhabitants with their environment by reclaiming and revitalizing the city's lost rivers. The primary function of the project is to provide a range of housing options while promoting sustainability and community interaction.

The design consists of multifaceted residential units combined with communal spaces and public amenities, structured around existing waterways. The layout not only addresses the pressing demand for housing but also emphasizes inclusivity through adaptable dwelling configurations capable of accommodating different family structures. The architecture utilizes a blend of traditional and contemporary materials, including brick, glass, and wood, establishing a harmonious relationship with the urban context.

The integration of decentralized energy sources such as hydro turbines exemplifies the project's commitment to sustainability. By harnessing energy from the nearby river, the design addresses energy efficiency and reduces reliance on external power sources. Furthermore, the elevated structures enhance flood resilience, promoting safety while permitting public use beneath the buildings.

Innovative Public Space Integration

A significant aspect of the Urban Ecosystem project is its focus on public spaces designed to encourage community engagement. Ground-level areas feature markets, cafes, and recreational amenities that facilitate social interaction and foster a sense of belonging among residents. The design incorporates a pedestrian bridge, promoting connectivity between the housing units and the waterfront, enhancing mobility and interaction with nature in an urban setting.

The project stands out not only for its ecological considerations but also for its architectural approach to spatial design. The carefully oriented layout allows for natural light penetration and views of the waterfront, maximizing the benefits of the surrounding landscape. Additionally, flexible living arrangements provide residents with customizable options that cater to diverse lifestyles, promoting a more efficient use of space in urban living.

Resilience and Sustainability in Design

Sustainability is a core principle throughout the Urban Ecosystem project, reflected in the design and material choices. The combination of durable materials—brick for structural integrity, glass for transparency and light, and wood for a natural aesthetic—creates a robust environment conducive to both community living and ecological harmony.

The architectural design emphasizes flood resilience, with elevated structures mitigating risks associated with rising water levels. This aspect is critical, particularly in a city that faces climate-related challenges. The overall project not only aims to meet housing needs but also serves as a model for integrating ecological awareness and sustainable practices within urban residential developments.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
