5 key facts about this project
Hreyfing Hús is located at the tectonic divide between Europe and America, reflecting the unique geological features of its setting. It consists of two main components: a Movie Theater and an Event Space. The design concept focuses on the relationship between movement and light, creating a spatial experience that encourages exploration and interaction with the landscape.
Design Concept
The project’s approach takes advantage of the site’s natural topography, creating a rippling effect inspired by the movement of tectonic plates. A man-made cut separates the two buildings, forming a significant crevice. This design feature serves as both a physical and conceptual journey, allowing visitors to experience a narrowed passageway that enhances their connection to the surrounding landscape.
Building Features
The Movie Theater has a cave-like interior, with a roof that rises above the ground. The volcanic rock used for the roof integrates the structure with its natural environment, promoting an immersive experience. Light enters through frosted glass, revealing the theater’s activities while maintaining a connection to the outside landscape.
Functional Versatility
The Event Space is designed to serve multiple functions such as film screenings, community gatherings, and private celebrations. It features a glass facade that provides wide views of the landscape, creating an open and welcoming atmosphere. Inside, tall sheer curtains are printed with patterns inspired by the Northern Lights, adding visual interest while helping to manage light and sound.
Sustainability and Integration
Sustainability is an important aspect of Hreyfing Hús. Separating the Movie Theater and Event Space helps to reduce energy consumption. The design includes materials that can be recycled or reused, contributing to an environmentally friendly approach. The soil excavated to create the crevice is repurposed into a rammed earth barrier around the parking area, enhancing the integration of the structures with their environment.
The interior features a transitional open space that encourages interaction, including a sunken seating area with a fire pit. This design detail fosters a connection between indoor and outdoor environments, providing a place for people to gather and enjoy their surroundings.
