Circular Amphitheater Framed by Glulam Wood in a Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

A circular amphitheater, framed by Glulam wood and integrated into the volcanic landscape, provides a community space for visitors to relax and learn about the surrounding environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Circular design enhances community engagement through a central amphitheater.
02
Glulam wood frames integrate with the volcanic context for structural and aesthetic harmony.
03
Minimal landscape intervention preserves the natural terrain while accommodating visitor needs.
04
Rainwater collection systems promote sustainability and efficient resource management.
05
Large windows frame scenic views, connecting interior spaces with the surrounding landscape.

The HVERFJALL COFFEE SHOP is positioned within the volcanic landscape of Hverfjall, designed to provide a space for visitors to rest and gather information. The layout blends functional areas with a focus on community interaction. The design concept embraces the unique characteristics of the location while offering essential amenities for those exploring the natural environment.

Circular Amphitheater

A circular amphitheater forms the centerpiece of the design, creating a space for social gatherings and events. This shape is complemented by a rock wall that not only serves as a visual element but also enhances the structural integrity of the space. The amphitheater allows for cultural activities and encourages community engagement, making it a vital part of the visitor experience.

Functional Layout

The arrangement of spaces includes a coffee shop, souvenir store, exhibition area, information point, restrooms, and storage facilities. These components are placed to meet the needs of hikers and tourists, providing easy access to important services. The thoughtful layout ensures that visitors can navigate the area comfortably while enjoying their time at the site.

Materiality and Sustainability

Materials chosen for construction include concrete, steel, local stone, and Glulam birch wood. These selections reflect the local environment and cultural context. Sustainability is a core focus, with strategies such as rainwater collection, energy-efficient lighting, and modular design all contributing to reduced environmental impact. This approach underscores a commitment to both the landscape and future use.

Large windows frame picturesque views, merging indoor and outdoor experiences. The warm interior contrasts with the rugged exterior, fostering a connection between the building and the surrounding volcanic terrain.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.
