5 key facts about this project
The Samflétta project integrates architecture and the landscape of Iceland, particularly the Mid-Atlantic ridge and Grjótagjá caves. Designed as a movie pavilion, it provides visitors with an immersive experience centered around Icelandic cinema. The overall design emphasizes a multi-sensory journey that begins at the entrance and continues through various spaces in the pavilion, allowing a connection between the structure and its natural surroundings.
Spatial Experience
Visitors enter the pavilion through a foyer that encourages them to enjoy a warm drink while engaging with visual displays. This initial space leads to a restaurant offering local dishes and scenic views of Hlíðarfjall mountain. The arrangement fosters community and enhances the visitor experience, making the entrance a welcoming point for all.
Circulation and Interaction
The layout of the pavilion facilitates smooth movement from the foyer to the movie theater. Comfortable seating accommodates different visitors, while modern audiovisual technology enriches the viewing experience. The design ensures an engaging cinematic journey where the narrative of Icelandic film history is interwoven with each visitor’s exploration of the space.
Connection to Landscape
An important aspect of the design is its connection to the surrounding landscape. Carefully chosen elevations and sightlines help tie the interior spaces to the natural features outside. This thoughtful integration allows visitors to appreciate the landscape’s beauty while enjoying the architectural form, fostering an awareness of their environment.
Expanded Experience
The pavilion includes a 360-degree viewpoint terrace, encouraging visitors to explore beyond the interior. This terrace serves as a link to the Grjótagjá caves, emphasizing the building’s role as a starting point for discovering the local landscape. Architectural details and the surrounding scenery work together, prompting deeper engagement with both the structure and the distinctive Icelandic character.
