The design centers around meditation and mindfulness, creating an environment that encourages tranquility and self-reflection. Located within a setting that includes streets, parks, and indoor areas, it features meditation capsules arranged in a circular layout. This structure references the enso symbol, representing unity and balance integral to meditative practice. The design allows users to engage deeply with their thoughts, promoting an atmosphere of inner peace.

Conceptual Framework

Grounded in the idea of PRANA, which signifies life force energy vital to all beings, the design translates this concept into carefully planned spaces. The circular formation enhances the meditative experience by inviting individuals to center themselves and connect with their surroundings. This approach provides both a quiet refuge for personal reflection and a space for shared experiences.

Spatial Dynamics

Configurations throughout the design cater to various user needs, offering options for single, double, or group settings. This flexibility encourages social interaction while still providing the opportunity for individual contemplation. Mobile elements enable users to create their own space within enclosed areas, which supports their meditative focus. The minimalistic design effectively limits distractions, ensuring an environment conducive to deep thought.

Key Features

Dynamic attributes such as rotating elements and portable components enhance the usability of the space. Acoustic considerations are also included to reduce outside noise, creating a calm atmosphere. Bioluminescent lighting is used to set a soothing tone, playing a significant role in the overall mood of the environment. Elements representing breath, energy, life, and strength are incorporated throughout the design, contributing to the sensory experience of users.

Modularity and Adaptability

A key aspect of the design is its modularity, enabling the construction of cabins as easily transportable units. This feature supports various uses and allows spaces to be tailored to individual practices. Users can blend ready-made components to generate different configurations, enhancing the versatility of the environment.

Particular attention to detail in design elements reflects a commitment to creating a space that meets functional requirements while also nurturing the deeper aspects of meditation. The result is an environment that allows individuals to immerse themselves in meaningful practices and find moments of clarity amidst the demands of daily life.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
