DABU HOUSE is a thoughtfully designed structure located in Latvia, intended as a temporary home and workshop for painters. It serves both as a living space and a creative environment, allowing multiple families to share the property comfortably over time. The architecture is centered on facilitating collaboration among artists while ensuring their privacy, creating a balanced atmosphere that focuses on interaction.

Design Concept and Context

The setting in Latvia's continental climate is vital to the design's development. Cold winters and frequent rain influence how the house handles insulation and energy use. The project seeks to connect with the local landscape, emphasizing sustainability and ecological awareness. A garden roof is central to this approach, promoting natural integration with the surroundings and maintaining environmental harmony.

Sustainable Features

The garden roof, drawing inspiration from Le Corbusier’s work, serves several functions. It enhances the appearance of the house while improving energy efficiency and maintaining a cooler indoor climate. The vegetation supports local wildlife and contributes to biodiversity. The design effectively manages rainwater, showcasing a clear commitment to sustainable practices that respect the natural ecosystem.

Integration with Local Ecology

In a notable design choice, a bats den is incorporated into the roof structure. This element recognizes the importance of local wildlife and fosters a natural relationship with the environment. The inclusion of this habitat demonstrates a respect for biodiversity and emphasizes the ecological significance of the area, enhancing the overall project’s alignment with its surroundings.

Spatial Configuration

Inside DABU HOUSE, the layout carefully balances private areas with communal spaces. Individual privacy is respected, while spaces for interaction are created. This arrangement supports both personal artistic endeavors and family life. The design encourages a smooth transition between the workshop and living areas, allowing creativity to blend with daily routines. The thoughtful configuration enriches the experience of living and working in this shared space, fostering a strong sense of community among its inhabitants.

The connection between workspaces and living areas highlights the importance of both aspects, offering a practical environment for artists while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for families.
