Bat Habitat Above A Thatched Roof Shelter Overlooking A Tranquil Lake

Project in-detail

A bat habitat integrated into a timber framework sits above a thatched roof, overlooking a serene lake and lush trees, creating a versatile shelter for communal living.
5 key facts about this project
01
Bat habitat integrated into the framework enhances ecological awareness.
02
Thatched roof design optimizes insulation and energy efficiency.
03
Timber sourced locally to reinforce the connection to the site.
04
Dual dwelling layout promotes both community interaction and privacy.
05
Views of both the lake and trees provide diverse living experiences.

Set against a tranquil landscape featuring a lake and abundant trees, the shelter is designed to connect with its environment. Located on the site of an old barn, the structure respects the historical context while addressing contemporary living needs. It focuses on finding balance between shared spaces and private areas, creating a thoughtful living experience that embraces the site’s natural beauty.

Concept and Organization

The design includes two separate living units that promote both community and privacy. Common areas face the tree line, inviting residents to engage with nature daily. In contrast, private spaces look out onto the calming lake, providing a peaceful retreat. The workshop acts as a central hub, encouraging interaction between the families who inhabit the shelter and fostering a sense of togetherness.

Vernacular Influence and Materiality

Drawing inspiration from local building traditions, the shelter utilizes wooden structures supported by a masonry base. The design considers the region's climate, which limits the use of large windows. The roofs, made with thatch, enhance insulation and maintain a connection to traditional styles. Local resources are a key aspect of the project, incorporating timber from nearby trees and stones from the old barn, which strengthens the bond between the architecture and its geographical surroundings.

Architectural Expression

The design takes a fresh approach to traditional forms of vernacular architecture. It features a stone base that holds an exposed timber framework, balancing modern elements with historical significance. Some parts of this framework are home to bats, which reflects a concern for the local ecosystem and highlights the thoughtful integration of living spaces with wildlife.

Spatial Experience

Inside the shelter, the layout encourages an array of experiences while maintaining a suitable atmosphere. The arrangement of rooms blends open areas with cozy spots, promoting different uses throughout the day. Walls frame views of the landscape, allowing natural light to pour in, which creates bright and cheerful interiors. Each space is crafted to enhance the interaction with the site's natural features, offering a harmonious living experience.
