Garry Novianto and Rudy Hermanto

Garry Novianto and Rudy Hermanto from Indonesia

Garry Novianto finished his architecture studies at Tarumanagara University, Jakarta in 2015. While Rudy Hermanto finished his architecture studies at North Sumatra University, Medan in 2011. We met when we worked together in a design firm in Jakarta between 2015 and 2016. In 2018, we started to work together on some projects and also became associate architects of Simon+Dhoni Studio based in Medan, North Sumatra as the company expanded its business in Jakarta.

Brief information about the projects that you/your company have been involved with. For instance what scale have you focused on/preferred, any significant projects where company/ individuals have been involved?

Now we are working on some projects around Indonesia, including private residence in Jakarta, Tangerang, office interior in Batang (Central Java province), a restaurant in Pekanbaru (Riau province), Hotel in Sidikalang (North Sumatra province). We also participated in some national and international architectural competitions. Recently we became one of the participants in Bintaro Design District 2019 held by the community of Indonesian architects.

What does architecture mean to you and what is the role of an architect in your society?

Architecture is the result of a collaborative thinking process to find the best solution which considers many aspects, a collaboration between architects, client, engineer, contractor, and another related group.

For us, architecture affects almost all aspects of our daily life. We believe that architecture shapes our behavior, our interaction, and society. So we strive to make architecture that gives a positive contribution to the clients, to the users, to the society and also to the environment. In the end, the architect has the responsibility to build society, culture, and also the future.

Why do you participate in architecture vision competitions?

Architecture competitions become our media to share our ideas and thoughts which sometimes we can’t deliver on our real projects. This way also improves our creative mind to always find new ideas and possibilities. Participating in architectural competition also challenges our idea in a bigger world that we can see where we/our idea/our architecture practice stand.

What advice would you give to individuals who struggle to decide whether it would be beneficial for them to participate in architecture vision competitions?

We believe participating in architectural competitions has always been a benefit for us. Our suggestion is that you choose the type and scale of the projects that suit you, whether conceptual competition or real projects to build, the time you need to spend to work on it, and the team you need to finish it. Don’t be afraid of losing or not winning the prize.

Compete in a bigger world, challenge your commitment and teamwork, find out new thoughts/solutions/ideas, those all have been beneficial things we need to consider for our architectural practice. We never know how good our idea is until we share it, and architectural competitions are one of the best ways to share it.
