Waffle Timber Ramp Elevates Steel Observation Structure Within Natural Ecosystem

Project in-detail

Constructed with a continuous waffle timber ramp and supported by a steel structure, the observation tower offers an accessible platform for visitors to engage with the diverse ecosystems of Kemeri National Park.
5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with a continuous 1:20 gradient ramp for universal accessibility.
02
Utilizes a waffle timber floor structure to optimize strength and reduce material use.
03
Incorporates perforated stainless steel grating to enhance water drainage and visibility.
04
Strategically placed to provide 360-degree panoramic views of the park’s diverse ecosystems.
05
Features native vegetation integration to blend the structure with the surrounding landscape.

The Kemeri National Park Observation Tower is a contemporary architectural project designed to enhance visitor engagement within the natural landscape of Kemeri National Park. The tower serves as an observation point, offering panoramic views of the park's diverse ecosystems. Its primary function is to provide an accessible pathway that allows individuals, including those with mobility impairments, to experience the surrounding nature from an elevated vantage point.

The structure's architectural design consists of a continuous spiral ramp that rises gently over 200 meters, promoting ease of movement while integrating seamlessly with the environment. The ramp's gradient of 1:20 ensures that all visitors can access the observation area, reinforcing principles of inclusivity within architectural design.

Unique Design Approaches One notable aspect of the tower's design is its focus on minimal environmental impact. The use of translucent and perforated materials allows for natural water drainage, minimizing disturbance to local flora and fauna. This approach highlights a commitment to sustainable practices, ensuring that the tower’s presence enhances rather than disrupts the surrounding ecosystem.

Structural elements of the tower comprise a waffle timber floor structure, supported by structural steel elements. The transparency provided by perforated stainless steel grating not only allows visitors to see through the floor but also aids in water runoff, exemplifying a balance between function and aesthetics.

The visual experience from the tower is enhanced through its placement in the landscape. The design allows for unobstructed views, creating a seamless interaction between the observer and the natural environment. This connection is further emphasized by the surrounding installation of native vegetation, which helps integrate the tower into the park context.

Accessibility is a critical component of the project, distinguishing it from other observation towers. By ensuring access for all individuals, the tower promotes a comprehensive experience of nature, setting a standard for future architectural interventions in similar settings.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the various elements of this project, including detailed architectural plans and design sections, to gain a greater understanding of its innovative design and implementation strategies. The integration of functional architecture with a focus on environmental stewardship reflects a contemporary approach to design in natural settings.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
