The Retirement 'Forest' Home is designed to improve the lives of older adults living in nursing homes in Chile. This initiative responds to the isolation many seniors have faced during the global pandemic. The design concept creates a virtual space that encourages recreational activities and social interaction, aiming to reconnect residents with nature and their community. By addressing these core needs, the project seeks to enhance the well-being of its users.

Spatial Organization

The layout features a living and collaboration room as the main entry point for residents. This space promotes social interaction and provides opportunities for collaborative learning. Outside this area, a multipurpose room accommodates a variety of physical and social activities, allowing for different forms of engagement. This arrangement supports both group interactions and personal experiences, addressing the diverse needs of the residents.

Rest and Connection Areas

Rest and connection areas within the design offer direct access to the virtual forest and leisure platform. These spaces invite users to explore and engage with their surroundings. Four individual work modules provide private spaces for personal activities. By balancing community areas with private zones, the design fosters a sense of belonging while respecting individual preferences.

Material Selection

Certain materials play a crucial role in both the function and appearance of the building. Concrete is used for structural elements, ensuring durability and stability. The warmth of wood finishes creates a more inviting atmosphere within the living spaces. Translucent glass is featured in the building envelope, maximizing natural light and linking the interior to the surrounding greenery.

Accessible pathways are incorporated throughout the spaces to facilitate easy movement. This design consideration helps residents navigate areas comfortably. Clear routes contribute to a sense of familiarity, promoting a positive environment for those who may experience cognitive challenges.
