5 key facts about this project
The Periscope is a conceptual retreat situated near Gozjā “Little Lake” in Latvia, designed as a place for rest, observation, and reflection within a forested setting. The proposal explores how small-scale architecture can support meditation and retreat by integrating cabins into the natural terrain. The arrangement of structures emphasizes both individual seclusion and opportunities for shared interaction, encouraging a balance between solitude and community engagement.
Spatial Strategy
The design introduces a cluster of cylindrical cabins positioned among trees, varying in elevation to establish a dynamic relationship with the sloping ground. Large glazed facades frame panoramic views of the forest and lake while maximizing the penetration of natural light. Pathways interlink the cabins, creating opportunities for movement across the site and facilitating gradual transitions between private and communal spaces. The proximity to the water extends the program to include outdoor activities such as kayaking and fishing.
Materiality and Environmental Approach
Construction relies on local timber and weathered concrete, selected for durability and their ability to harmonize with the surrounding landscape. Energy efficiency is addressed through passive heating and cooling strategies, supplemented by solar panels integrated into the roofs. Openings are carefully oriented to capture daylight and minimize the need for artificial lighting, reinforcing the project’s sustainable focus while enhancing the interior atmosphere of retreat spaces.
