Sombra House is situated in the Serra de Estrela region of Portugal, within the Vale de Moses Yoga Retreat. Designed to create a peaceful space, it encourages visitors to connect with nature and themselves. The architecture embodies a concept that supports introspection and mindfulness, providing a distinct experience that aligns with the teachings of yoga.

Spatial Organization
The design focuses on the arrangement of spaces and the quality of light. Guests transition from a dimly lit entryway into brighter communal areas, guiding them through different emotional experiences. The washroom is deliberately designed to be dim, enhancing the soft light that filters into the space. This thoughtful organization encourages both social interaction and personal reflection, allowing visitors to find their own peace.

Integration with Nature
Sombra House creates a strong link between its indoor and outdoor environments. Outdoor seating areas offer impressive views, while the timber lattice structure allows gentle sunlight to filter through, heightening the connection with the landscape. Pathways connecting the various spaces invite exploration, enabling guests to engage fully with the natural beauty around them.

Sustainable Strategies
Attention to sustainability is evident in Sombra House. The roof is angled to capture sunlight for solar energy, and the porous facade helps light enter the building while supporting plant life. Other features, such as a greywater system and drying cabinets, show the commitment to conserving resources. These strategies work together to create an environment that respects nature.

Material Selection
The materials used evoke traditional Portuguese architecture with the use of wood, clay, stone, and ceramic tiles. This choice connects the house with local building practices and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. The combination of these materials enriches the experience for visitors, making them feel at home in this tranquil retreat.

Large windows frame captivating views of the surrounding hills, inviting the outside in and creating a space that feels alive with its natural context.
