The Quinta do Monte d'Oiro Hotel is located in a beautiful vineyard setting, designed with a focus on well-being, which is captured by the concept of "bonheur." The layout of the hotel separates the site into two main areas: the upper section that provides private guest rooms and the lower section where public amenities such as pools and gathering spaces are found. This arrangement promotes both personal relaxation and social interaction.

Design Concept

The design takes inspiration from the natural growth of grapevines. Pathways weave through the site, encouraging guests to explore and connect with the surroundings. Features like ramps and a bridge not only help people move easily but also create sightlines that link the hotel to the vineyard and the broader landscape. This approach allows guests to feel a stronger bond with the natural environment.

Spatial Organization

Each part of the hotel's layout serves a specific purpose. The upper zone focuses on privacy, offering rooms that cater to different comfort levels, while the lower zone includes spaces for social activities. The guest rooms are categorized into four types: standard (Branco), superior (Rose), suites (Tinto), and a master suite (Reserva). This classification ensures that a range of needs is met while providing unique experiences.

Architectural Features

Key architectural elements are designed to fit the context of the site. The reception area features a sloped roof that helps it blend with the surroundings while offering clear views and ease of access. A consistent portico design creates sheltered areas, connecting different sections of the hotel. These features improve both usability and comfort for guests.

Material Identity

The visual identity of the Quinta do Monte d'Oiro Hotel is shaped primarily by white fine-textured stucco. This material choice reflects a simple and clean aesthetic. By focusing on this understated finish, the design highlights the way light interacts with surfaces and maintains a connection to the natural landscape. The simplicity of the materials enhances the overall design.

Attention to detail in the hotel's design fosters a sense of calm. Guests are invited to enjoy the balance between the constructed environments and the natural surroundings, creating a place where well-being is central to the experience.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
