Terraced Observation Spaces Created with Wood Panels and Steel Fastenings

Project in-detail

Constructed from wood panels and anchored by steel fastenings, the terraced structure integrates seamlessly with the landscape, offering elevated observation spaces designed for engagement with the surrounding natural features.
5 key facts about this project
01
Terraced layout enhances views of the surrounding landscape.
02
Observation areas are strategically placed for optimal visibility.
03
Constructed using wood panels with specific thickness measurements.
04
Steel fastenings create a durable connection between structural elements.
05
Adjacent to fossilized dunes that add geological context.

Dunes Tower is situated within a natural landscape that highlights the relationship between the built environment and its surroundings. The structure serves as a space for observation and engagement, designed to offer visitors a connection to the scenic beauty of the area. The overall concept draws inspiration from the forms found in the local topography, featuring streamlined and layered shapes that reflect the characteristics of nearby sand dunes and sedimentary rocks.

Conceptual Framework
-
The design draws from the geological features of the site, aiming to create a harmonious connection between the tower and its environment. Terraces are incorporated to enhance internal views and promote an interaction with the outside. The open plan allows for visual corridors that welcome exploration and reflection, encouraging visitors to engage with the landscape that surrounds them.

Structural Composition
-
A clear approach to structural composition characterizes Dunes Tower. The assembly of the building involves the cutting of steel fastenings, which connect horizontal and vertical panels, resulting in a solid structure. Observation areas are thoughtfully positioned on two platforms to provide optimal lookout points. Features like stepped seating invite users to rest and gather, fostering a sense of community alongside personal contemplation.

Material Specification
-
The project specifies particular materials and measurements that contribute to its strength and overall appearance. Wooden panels with a thickness of 2 inches and widths of 30 to 35 cm are central to the design. This careful selection ensures that the materials align with the intended architectural expression while maintaining functionality.

Contextual Integration
-
The design also considers its geographical context through the presence of fossilized dunes close by. These ancient formations highlight the historical significance of the site, creating a story that complements the tower. Dunes Tower interacts with the landscape, reflecting the bonds between nature and human-made environments.

The arrangement of Dunes Tower features different levels that provide various perspectives, encouraging visitors to see the surrounding environment anew. The careful choice of shapes, seating, and viewing platforms gives the building a specific character, while reinforcing its connection to the natural world.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
