The Vogafjós Cinema and Restaurant is located in the stunning landscape of Iceland, a place defined by its features of fire and ice. The pavilion serves essential functions: it houses a restaurant, a farm, and a geothermally heated greenhouse. The design connects these elements while embracing sustainability, inviting people to engage with both the building and the surrounding nature.

Architectural Concept

The design emphasizes a connection between the building and its environment, reflecting the natural shapes found in the landscape. The structure has a fluid appearance that encourages movement and exploration. It is organized to enhance how visitors experience the various spaces, allowing for easy transitions between eating, farming, and leisure activities.

Materiality

Durability and sustainability are key considerations, reflected in the use of locally sourced stone. This choice not only reinforces the building’s strength but also ties it to traditional Icelandic construction. By utilizing local materials, the design highlights a sense of place and helps the pavilion feel like a true part of its surroundings.

Interior Design

Inside, the layout encourages social interaction. Chalets are positioned to overlook landscaped gardens, creating a warm atmosphere. This arrangement promotes gatherings and shared experiences, providing a welcoming environment. The interior is both functional and inviting, designed to foster joy among visitors.

Cultural Narrative

Inspiration for the design comes from the Icelandic painter Svavar Guðnason. This artistic influence adds depth and character to the space. The building acts as a backdrop for stories and histories tied to the landscape. It connects the past with the present, offering a place for reflection and community.

The expansive canopy extends outward, providing shelter while reinforcing connections to the natural setting. This gesture embodies the spirit of Icelandic hospitality, making it a generous space for all who visit.
