Gaudi La Coma is located in Huesca, Spain, within Finca La Coma. Designed as an artist residence and education hub, the project aims to create a communal space that encourages creativity and collaboration among its residents. Inspired by the works of Antoni Gaudi, the design blends natural elements with functional living and working spaces, fostering an environment that supports artistic expression and personal growth.

Concept and Function

The concept centers around adapting existing structures to serve new purposes. The central plaza acts as a gathering space, allowing artists to come together and engage in social and creative activities. This design offers flexibility and encourages a free exchange of ideas, promoting a sense of community that is essential for collaborative work.

Sustainability and Landscape

Sustainability is an important aspect of the design. The project aims to preserve the surrounding olive and almond trees, integrating them into the overall environment. This connection to nature not only enhances the beauty of the site but also provides opportunities for hands-on learning about sustainable practices in urban farming. The design encourages residents to engage with the landscape, reinforcing their relationship with the environment.

Zoning and Circulation

The layout is thoughtfully organized to create distinct zones for living and communal activities. The plaza serves as the focal point, linking the individual residences and shared spaces. By placing artist residences on the perimeter, the design ensures privacy while still maintaining access to common areas. Pathways throughout the site are constructed to be accessible, allowing for ease of movement for everyone, including those with mobility challenges.

Materiality and Aesthetics

The materials chosen for the project reflect a balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal. The metal roof offers durability while giving a contemporary look. Plywood bunk beds provide practical sleeping arrangements within the residences. Rustic brick adds a touch of warmth and connects the architecture to the natural surroundings, promoting a sense of place that feels authentic and inviting.

Overall, the integration of these materials creates an environment that is both welcoming and conducive to artistic endeavors. The design highlights a commitment to fostering creativity while respecting the beauty of the natural landscape.
