5 key facts about this project
The Kip Island Auditorium is located in the urban setting of Riga, Latvia. It enhances the Riga Expo Centre's relationship with its surroundings. The design serves both as an auditorium and a public space, aiming to foster community interaction. The concept focuses on connectivity. Open spaces and transparency help to merge the structure with the old town and the Daugava River, creating a unified urban area.
Design Concept
The design begins with a process of homogenizing the existing buildings on the site. This leads to the creation of two distinct volumes positioned on the eastern side. These volumes enclose a large public plaza that serves as the main entrance to the auditorium. It also functions as a space for community events. The approach prioritizes public access and encourages interaction, reflecting a desire to engage the local community in a shared environment.
Facade Treatment
A key feature of the auditorium is the perforated metal skin that wraps around the building. This facade gives a consistent look while managing the entry of light. It enhances the atmosphere inside the spaces by directing light and shadow. The design of the facade is thoughtful, promoting visual connections between the plaza, lobby, and auditorium. It guides visitors and enhances their experience within the structure.
Spatial Organization
The layout of the building clearly separates its different functions. The northern volume is reserved for parking. In contrast, the southern volume contains the auditorium and associated spaces. This division allows for easy movement and efficiently uses the available area. At the heart of the southern volume is the “black box” auditorium. It combines conference rooms, exhibition spaces, and larger auditorium halls in a compact design, supported by technical services located in a thick wall.
Terrace Design
One standout element is the roof, which has been transformed into a multifunctional terrace. This area offers views of the Daugava River and the city. It also serves as an open-air space for events and gatherings. This feature showcases the design's flexibility and commitment to creating accessible spaces for the community.
Natural light and well-designed views connect indoor areas with the outside world. Visitors can easily transition between the architecture and nature, enhancing their overall experience. The architecture successfully fulfills its role as a dynamic space for both everyday use and special occasions.
