In the north of Iceland, close to the Grjótagjá caves, a new building connects visitors to the unique geology of the area. The site is situated within a fault line that divides the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The design focuses on offering exploration opportunities while enhancing appreciation for the surrounding natural beauty. A pathway links two adjacent buildings, encouraging movement and interaction with the landscape.

Design Concept

The layout creates a strong relationship between the opposing buildings, which face each other across the walking path. This arrangement highlights the geological divide while allowing visitors to enjoy stunning views. The entrance is positioned below ground level to take advantage of changes in elevation. This design choice creates a sheltered space that includes a café, waiting area, restrooms, and an office, making it practical for guests.

Spatial Experience

Upon entering the stone building, visitors begin to ascend toward the observation tower. This tower serves as the main feature of the design, leading the eye upward with its slender form. The difference in height between the solid base and the tower creates a sense of progression.
