Panoramic Observation Tower With Stone Base Reflecting Local Geology

Project in-detail

Rising from a solid stone base, the observation tower captures panoramic views of Iceland's unique fault line while connecting visitors to the landscape through a carefully designed walking path and integrated public spaces.
5 key facts about this project
01
Rises above a fault line that separates two tectonic plates.
02
Integrates a geothermal heating system for energy efficiency.
03
Features a pathway that spans several kilometers through the landscape.
04
Offers diverse viewing angles from multiple levels of the tower.
05
Utilizes locally sourced materials to connect with the environment.

In the north of Iceland, close to the Grjótagjá caves, a new building connects visitors to the unique geology of the area. The site is situated within a fault line that divides the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The design focuses on offering exploration opportunities while enhancing appreciation for the surrounding natural beauty. A pathway links two adjacent buildings, encouraging movement and interaction with the landscape.

Design Concept

The layout creates a strong relationship between the opposing buildings, which face each other across the walking path. This arrangement highlights the geological divide while allowing visitors to enjoy stunning views. The entrance is positioned below ground level to take advantage of changes in elevation. This design choice creates a sheltered space that includes a café, waiting area, restrooms, and an office, making it practical for guests.

Spatial Experience

Upon entering the stone building, visitors begin to ascend toward the observation tower. This tower serves as the main feature of the design, leading the eye upward with its slender form. The difference in height between the solid base and the tower creates a sense of progression. As guests move along the path, they encounter various vantage points that allow for different views of the Icelandic landscape. Each level offers a unique atmosphere, enriching the overall experience and inviting deeper engagement with nature.

Materiality and Sustainability

The construction prominently features wood and stone, materials that reflect the local environment and emphasize a sturdy foundation combined with a lighter structure. This choice not only relates to the geological context but also enhances the tactile relationship with the rugged terrain. Sustainability is central to the design. Energy self-sufficiency is achieved through a fireplace that heats the café, a geothermal system for additional warmth, and solar panels that provide necessary electricity for everyday use.

Details of the Observation Tower

The observation tower exemplifies a balanced combination of function and design. It rises above the stone base, inviting visitors to ascend and take in the surroundings. The tower’s form allows for multiple viewing angles, enriching the visitor experience as they approach the panoramic terrace at the top. These deliberate design choices highlight the delicate features of the surrounding landscape while providing a peaceful space for reflection.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
