Modular Housing Crafted From Recycled Plastics and Cross-Laminated Timber Panels

Project in-detail

Utilizing recycled plastics and cross-laminated timber panels, this modular shelter offers an adaptable and sustainable housing solution designed to address homelessness in urban environments.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes recycled plastics for structural components, reducing environmental impact.
02
Incorporates hydroponic systems for on-site food production and sustainability education.
03
Features adaptable modular units that can be reconfigured based on community needs.
04

05
Employs charred wooden shingles for durability and fire resistance.

The DOMHII Shelter project addresses urban homelessness through an innovative architectural design that emphasizes sustainability and community integration. This project focuses on transforming waste materials into functional housing solutions while creating spaces that promote social interaction among residents. The design features modular units that can be adapted for varying community needs, making it a versatile response to the ongoing challenge of inadequate housing in urban settings.

Sustainability is at the core of the project, translating into a selection of eco-friendly materials and systems. The use of recycled plastics and bioplastics aims to reduce environmental impact while providing durable living structures. Incorporating renewable energy through solar panels and systems for rainwater harvesting further assists in promoting self-sufficiency for residents.

Unique Modular Design Strategies

What distinguishes the DOMHII Shelter from conventional projects is its modular approach. Each housing unit is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for various configurations based on the needs of the inhabitants. This adaptability ensures that the units not only meet basic shelter requirements but also foster a supportive community atmosphere. The inclusion of shared facilities, such as kitchens and workspace areas, encourages collaboration among residents, promoting a sense of belonging and collective responsibility.

Community Engagement and Circular Economy

Another notable aspect of this project is its emphasis on a circular economy model. By utilizing waste materials, the DOMHII Shelter project engages residents in sustainable practices that extend beyond their living environment. The integration of hydroponic systems facilitates food production and education, empowering residents to develop skills that can improve their quality of life. Additionally, the collaborative aspect of the design fosters a community spirit, which is critical in creating lasting solutions for homelessness.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
