The hut features a rolling chassis that allows for easy repositioning in various natural settings.
02
Its design incorporates a large open top, symbolizing the Crown Chakra for spiritual connection.
03
Materials include sustainable bamboo and straw boards, aligning with local building practices.

05
The spherical shape reduces wind resistance, improving stability during adverse weather.

The Doung Cambodian Hideout Hut is located within the Vine Retreat in Kep, Cambodia. It combines elements of ecotourism and Khmer spiritual practices. The design focuses on creating a strong connection between the hut and its natural setting. Its shape is spherical, which supports mobility, allowing the structure to be moved to various landscapes while also conveying cultural and spiritual meanings.

Spherical Form and Mobility

The spherical shape is critical to both the function and the philosophy of the hut. Built on a rolling chassis, it can detach and transform into a stable trestle when stationary. This mobility promotes interaction with the environment. Occupants can enjoy a direct relationship with their surroundings, enhancing their overall experience. The design encourages a connection to the land that reflects the transient nature of spiritual journeys.

Cultural Influence and Symbolism

Khmer religious beliefs significantly influence the design. The hut draws upon aspects of Buddhism, Hinduism, and indigenous animistic traditions. Its open top symbolizes the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara), serving as a metaphor for the integration of different facets of human experience. This connection to meditation and Yoga informs its purpose, enabling visitors to engage deeply with local traditions while they focus on reflection and mindfulness.

Materiality and Sustainability

The choice of materials plays a crucial role in the design’s success. Wood is used for the interior, while straw boards form the exterior cladding, and bamboo makes up the primary structural framework. These materials are thoughtfully selected to align with traditional Cambodian building practices. They minimize the ecological footprint of the hut, blending it harmoniously with the environment it occupies.

Functional Design Elements

Inside the hut, the layout is practical and addresses essential living needs. It accommodates sleeping arrangements for two, includes food preparation facilities, and contains a bathroom. There is also a designated resting area, which is important for comfort. An elevated meditation platform allows for quiet reflection, enhancing the occupants' experience. The large window provides views of the outside and can be secured with polycarbonate or a mosquito net, making both comfort and natural light integral to the design.

The aerodynamic qualities of the spherical form reduce wind resistance, improving stability. This thoughtful detail ensures that the hut remains a safe and comfortable retreat, regardless of the weather conditions.
