The Berlin Bass Note Booth, designed by Gabriel Multeido, represents a contemporary exploration of musical engagement through architecture. Situated in Berlin, a city renowned for its rich musical culture, this project embodies a dynamic space for interaction with sound and community. The booth functions primarily as a communal music venue that encourages both individual expression and group participation, effectively linking architecture and music.

The design features a multi-sectioned structure that encourages movement, resembling a stylized musical note or 'chord.' With dimensions measuring approximately 1.2 meters in width, 1.05 meters in height, and 15.7 meters in length, it is catered to a diverse range of users, particularly dancers. The central area can facilitate active involvement, positioning it as a focal point for musical gatherings. The structure's modular nature enables effective transportation and adaptability, supporting various artistic uses.

Unique Design Approaches

The Berlin Bass Note Booth distinguishes itself through its conceptual integration of music and space. The structural design incorporates a touch screen panel, allowing users to control ambient elements such as lighting and temperature via Bluetooth. This interactivity enhances the user experience and fosters a relationship between individuals and the architectural environment. Furthermore, the booth employs collapsible designs that use materials like PET Canvas, PVC, and HDPE. These selections prioritize both functionality and portability while maintaining durability.

The design also features openings secured by magnets, which promote ease of access and emphasize the flexible nature of the environment. This adaptability facilitates a range of activities, from solo performances to larger social events, reflecting Berlin's collaborative spirit in the arts.

Architectural Elements

The architectural elements of the booth emphasize a contemporary approach to public music venues. The transparency of the PET Canvas creates an inviting atmosphere, allowing natural light to filter through while providing an enclosed space for activities. The use of LED lighting contributes to the dynamic ambiance during performances, aligning with the energetic characteristics of Berlin's music scene.

Reinforced steel components ensure structural integrity, particularly around the technical installations, balancing safety and aesthetic considerations. The booth's overall design promotes sustainability through its modularity, minimizing environmental impact associated with construction and transportation. The intersection of musical heritage and modern architectural principles makes the Berlin Bass Note Booth a noteworthy example of how design can enhance cultural experiences.

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
