Lumber Structures Framing Community Engagement in Open-Air Performance Spaces

Project in-detail

Set within a natural landscape, a modular system of lumber and concrete forms an adaptable space that fosters community interaction and hosts a variety of performances in an open-air setting.
5 key facts about this project
01
Modular design allows for quick reconfiguration based on event size.
02
Concrete blocks provide moisture resistance for long-term structural integrity.
03
Lumber framing incorporates local cultural references through diagonal bracing.
04
Two distinct configurations optimize space for food service and seating.
05
Trellis structure enhances visual interest while providing weather protection.

The Courts of Māra is located on the outskirts of Aknīste parish, situated within the context of the Sansusī music festival. This setting celebrates a blend of classical and contemporary chamber music alongside other art forms, including circus, dance, and theatre. The design prioritizes flexibility and adaptability, fostering an engaging relationship between performers and audiences in an outdoor environment. This concept aims to create dynamic spaces that encourage movement and interaction.

Structural Design and Materiality

A radial arrangement of concrete blocks serves as the foundation for the floor deck, providing stability and addressing potential moisture issues. This ensures the structure's durability over time. The primary structure consists of lumber pieces connected by angle brackets, allowing for efficient assembly and a solid framework. The choice of these materials demonstrates thoughtfulness about both the functionality of the space and local sourcing practices.

Spatial Modulation and Flexibility

The design allows for various configurations, accommodating events of different scales, from small ensembles to larger orchestras. Diagonal bracings reinforce the structure's form and pay homage to local cultural symbols. This connection to the region enhances the project’s relevance and responsiveness to its surroundings.

Integration of Utility and Artistry

In the layout, the food court is organized into two specific areas, one serving food and the other providing seating. Together, they create a ringed trellis that offers shelter while visually intriguing the audience. This setup allows for flexible seating arrangements, making it possible to host multiple events simultaneously, thus enriching the community experience at the festival.

The Courts of Māra successfully balance practicality with creativity, resulting in a space that interacts well with its environment. The trellis structure not only meets functional needs but also enhances the visual character, inviting audiences to engage with a layered artistic atmosphere.
