The Kip Island Auditorium introduces a new dimension to the Exhibition Centre in Kipsala, Riga. By adding the East Wing, the project aims to improve the functionality of the facility while providing a strong sense of identity within its urban environment. The design emphasizes accessibility and community engagement, catering to both local residents and international visitors.

Design Concept

The design focuses on the idea of unifying space through the East Wing. This structure connects well with the existing buildings, creating a balanced relationship among them. The Great Hall serves as a central area for gatherings and events. This layout supports a variety of uses, emphasizing the versatility of the auditorium.

Public Realm Integration

At the north side of the East Wing, a public plaza offers space for outdoor activities and events. A network of pathways leads visitors from the Technical University Campus and Kipsalas Road to the auditorium, making the space more inviting. The addition of arches and commercial areas at ground level enriches the visitor experience and encourages community interaction.

Historical Context and Visual Connectivity

Special attention has been given to the southern approach to the building, which highlights connections to the historical district of Vecriga. The roof design is inspired by traditional architecture, reinforcing a sense of place. This approach not only enhances the visual appeal but also ties the new building to the history of the area.

Infrastructure and Functionality

Support for large numbers of visitors is a key consideration in the design. A parking facility with capacity for up to 700 vehicles is positioned to the north, facilitating access. This arrangement helps define the plaza for outdoor gatherings during warmer months and supports the integration of retail spaces that offer services to visitors.

The relationship between the Great Hall and the plaza creates a lively environment. Visitors can move easily between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing interaction and fostering a stronger sense of community through well-defined areas for events and activities.
